I can honestly say I would not be singing as well as I am today without the help and guidance of Valerie Sorel.

I first met Valerie in the Spring of 2002 when I was in need of some major vocal help. I had come from a very strong technical background and had lost my way. Valerie got my voice back on track one exercise at a time, which allowed me to fully comprehend and build from the exercises she gave to me. With her help I found myself being able to do things I never thought I could do, to sing with ease and agility, and developed strong high notes I did not have before.

In my career I find myself moving from one role to another very quickly. This can be very difficult without the proper technique. She addresses the challenged of each role as needed. For example, I was given the opportunity to sing Adina but had done more lyric roles before. Valerie gave me the tools I needed to be able to sing Adina's coloratura with ease while keeping the necessary legato needed for other parts of the role and for my voice.

I am truly thankful for Valerie's help, guidance, kindness, and professionalism. I can always be myself in the studio and I know I will always walk out of there feeling more solid, technically sound, and better than I was an hour before.

It is difficult to express what exactly makes Valerie such an exceptionally fine teacher. Is it her incredible empathy with her students? Is it her ability to transfer what her students are doing incorrectly into her own body, then make up an exercise to fix it, if she doesn’t already have one in her vast storage of knowledge? Is it her ability to treat the problems at their root, rather than applying a formula that may or may not work?

Those of us who are privileged to work with her feel incredibly lucky to do so, on every level. In my own experience, she has also become a treasured friend who has flown across the ocean to help me in moments of vocal difficulty, as well as a trusted mentor whom I consult on a myriad of subjects.

Having someone like Christopher Raeburn praise “One of the best techniques I have ever heard” in one’s student is as much a credit to the teacher who stands behind her as to the singer’s proficiency. Valerie is one of very few teachers who has received such praise.

My daughter began taking voice lessons with Valerie during her sophomore year in high school after hearing rave reviews about her talent as a voice teacher. She is now a junior in college and her vocal progress during this period has been nothing short of astonishing.

Valerie is a true teacher in all sense of the word. She is able to detect problems, solve them and present the solution in many different ways so the student is able to grasp the concept and implement it quickly. The student is not constricted by having to learn the method that worked for the teacher, but rather learn by the method that works for them. Not only does she solve the problem but she explains the solution in scientific detail so that the student knows exactly what caused the problem and why the solution corrected it. She takes a building block approach and each step is conquered in hours and days rather than years.

She is without exception, patient, cheerful and full of encouragement. No matter what repertoire my daughter is singing – opera, Broadway, jazz or Gospel, Valerie is able to match her voice to the genre and make it comfortable to sing and sound fabulous. The success of Valerie’s work can be measured by my daughter’s acceptance into top conservatories like Mannes, McGill and MSM, top competitions like the NFAA, major programs like Dolora Zajick’s Institute for Young Dramatic Voices as well as chorus/small role contracts in opera houses in Connecticut.

Not only is Valerie a superb teacher, but she gives students the opportunity to perform which has proved invaluable. My daughter has performed two major roles fully staged and done many opera scenes thanks to Valerie. I recommend Valerie as a voice teacher without hesitation, no matter what stage of development you are at.

Valerie Sorel has been the catalyst for the biggest vocal growth spurt I've ever experienced in my career. The frustrations I used to have about crating the sound colors and interpretations I want in my music have really stopped plaguing me as of late, because Valerie has given me so many tools which make singing so much more effortless and effective.

Because of her, I have a pianissimo which I never truly had before. She has a pair of ears that can hear anything from the tension in my neck, to sleeping the wrong way, or the slight swelling on my chords from the every day environmental stresses. She is also the nicest, most non-judgmental person one can hope to study with, which makes her studio a safe, positive environment to grow in comfortably.

She also knows how to be open and honest so that you can really get to the bottom of any vocal issues which need to get resolved. Since my studying with Valerie, presenters, composers, and other colleagues of mine have taken notice, and the amount of work I get has improved dramatically. You will certainly be in good hands with her, and I'm truly blessed to have her in my life making such a huge difference in it.

After graduating from college, I put away my singing to raise a family. I am sure there are many people that have done this too. Finally, in my mid-40's, I decided I wanted to do something for myself. I knew I wasn't going to have a career anymore, but this was unfinished business and I felt I needed someting that was my own.

I started studying with Valerie about 3-4 years ago. If I sounded this good in my 20's, I would have had an international career! I always say that Valerie is a vocal genius. I have studied with many other teachers, but nobody catches what is going on like Valerie. Not only does she hear something immediately, but she has a store of vocal 'tricks' that solve the issue. It's incredible.

I know she has many students with successful careers, but even if you just want to sing on a local level, she's a miracle worker!

I’ve had the privilege of studying voice with Valerie Sorel as my teacher for the past four years. She is an amazing vocal teacher in so many ways.

Valerie has a keen sense of hearing and can identify vocal problems and their physical source. Depending on the issue, she has a myriad of unique vocal exercises that target problem areas and get results, sometimes immediately.

My range on high notes has improved substantially as a result. Also, my flexibility, pitch accuracy and stamina with long runs have much improved as a result of her ability to diagnose and provide fun exercises that build coordination, control and confidence as well.

Most of all though, Valerie has made my confidence soar through her constant encouragement. I remember the first time she told me that my sound on a particular exercise was of “ professional stage quality”. I walked on air for a week and became a believer that I could do this ! That was so important because I started singing ten years ago at age 56 with little musical background except perhaps having a good ear. In the last four years I’ve developed my own classical and jazzy standard solo repertoire with a notable pianist. We perform regularly. In addition my wife and I perform together a broad array of classical, opera , standards and pop songs in the community. Most recently Valerie helped me record my first professional demo CD. With her support, I just want to keep going on my musical journey. Thank you, Valerie !

Valerie is an excellent vocal technician who knows the singing voice technically and aesthetically. Like a doctor, Valerie gives each student exactly what that student needs to sing better, fuller and completely naturally. Valerie is an excellent communicator, very positive, encouraging, and patient. She gives appropriate exercises to correct and strengthen the voice so that each student can sing to their natural and full potential.

There is nothing vague in the way she teaches or explains how to execute something vocally. Her technique does not 'get in the way', but exposes your natural full voice.

I truly appreciate working with Valerie, she is always ready, respectful, kind, encouraging and professional. It is not often that one finds an extraordinary singer and teacher in one person! Valerie is worth much more than her weight in gold!

Valerie has great ears and an amazing ability to diagnose technical weaknesses in the voice. Though some of her vocalises and exercises may seem unorthodox, every one of them is successful at strengthening the voice and building its range, stamina and flexibility.

She is also a very positive, encouraging teacher and goes the extra mile for her students, creating performance opportunities and helping them further their careers in any way she can.
